When it comes to buying gifts, giving the gift of something both entertaining and current can be a little tough. Wanting to abstain from simple chocolate or bathing supplies is a tight-rope because, well, what do people want? What do people like? Well, if you’re like me, it’s copies of my favorite releases from this year in physical form; movies, music or otherwise.
However, this creates another conundrum; what do they have?
What will keep them amused enough on the day so that I can get a moment’s peace? For the movies at least, here’s some of the best from the year for your various ages and loved ones.

Kids

The Lego Movie

EVERYTHING IS AWESOME! And everything is awesome with the film that really didn’t have any right to be any good. tumblr_n0g5izUNg71rkag3to1_400Licensed projects usually land on their arse with poor story-telling and just end up being a giant advertisement.
This IS a giant advertisement, but it’s also funny, charming and has enough cameo characters and laugh out loud moments to keep the younger folk enthused for hours.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

How To Train Your Dragon 2 managed the nigh-on impossible: create an animated film that’s very much not Disney that is also very easily compared to Disney’s best.

Because it is simply that good.
Strong emotive story-telling combined with a wicked narrative and lovable characters make a very distinctive sequel that absolutely dominated at the box-office, and rightly so!

Postman Pat: The Movie

Postman-Pat-The-Movie-mainCritics were a bit sniffy, but I enjoyed this little romp down memory lane for everyone’s favorite postman.
It’s not really a film about Postman Pat so much as it’s a film about the outside world invading Pat’s little town, but it’s still a perfectly enjoyable film that anyone of any age can get into because, frankly, Pat is still a timeless character. Some mild horror in places means the very young may need a cuddle, though!

Teens

The Fault In Our Stars

I loved it, and chances are your teenagers have already seen it and read the book. But if they don’t already, they’ll want to own this. One of the most tragic tales of teen angst of the modern era in a story that is as unrelenting as it is utterly beautiful. Make sure there’s some tissues nearby and you give them some space after to have all the feels in peace.

Divergent

Coincidentally, the same male and female leads take charge in ANOTHER Young Adult fiction adaptation. Divergent_scoreDivergent is of The Hunger Games ilk: dystopian future sees a male and female pairing breakout of the social norm and rally against the world in hope to find themselves a better tomorrow.
Whereas the Hunger Games trilogy is still proving to be a better set of films because it focuses on the world rather than the characters, Divergent still has a lot to offer and again, chances are your teens already saw it and want it!

Edge of Tomorrow

I know Tom Cruise is in it. tumblr_mxnpttPb6d1qdhps7o8_r1_250Yes, I know. But hear me out. Edge of Tomorrow is one of the smartest sci-fi blockbusters of the modern era.
Combining huge explosions and a heroic Tom Cruise with a wicked story and a premise that, if I didn’t know better, was a meta-homage to classic video games.
Come for the action, stay for how outright good it is.

Adults

X-Men: Days of Future Past

If there’s anyone over 18 in your life whose remotely into geek culture, get them this film. It is the X-Men film we’ve been waiting for. DoFP makes everything better by not only making the original trilogy invalid, but telling a story that feels like it was ripped right out of the pages of the comics, with a character play that feels believable, with characters that are more than the sum of their parts. This one was knocked out of the park and I cannot wait to see where the franchise goes next.

The Battery

I’m going to champion it until everyone has seen it at least once. Smartest zombie film in years and a bloody masterpiece outside of that. Jeremy Gardner deserves all the sales as reparations for the awards he’ll never see for this one.

Godzilla

So, there’s a small chance they might hate it, but you should still gamble and pick this up for your favorite friend/sibling/family member because its just that good. The big G roars back onto our screens in a huge battle for the Earth against a new enemy and though his appearances are a touch scant, his action isn’t and this makes it an ideal choice for a few brews on St. Stephen’s Day when the adults have a few minutes.
