Halloween comes but once a year… unfortunately!
Movies don’t have the monopoly on horror and soin the spirit of All Hallow’s Eve, I have gathered a list of must-see, terrifying, suspenseful and gore-fuelled horror anime guaranteed to send chills up your spine!

Soul Eater – Series

670px-Soul-Eater-Wallpaper-Background-Windows-AnimeNothing will get you in the mood for October 31st quite like Soul Eater. The theme of Halloween is present throughout the series with witches, ghosts and talking cats. Based on the manga of the same name, the series is set in a school run by the Grim Reaper called Death Weapon Meister Academy. The school is a training facility for humans with the ability to transform into weapons, as well as the wielders of those weapons, called meisters.
The goal of the meisters is to have their weapons defeat and absorb the souls of 99 evil humans and one witch. This will dramatically increase the power of their given weapon and turn them into “death scythes”. The premise sounds pretty whacky, even for an anime, trust me though, it’s well worth a watch.

Hellsing – Series

Hellsing-Anime-GifsIf you’re fascinated by vampires, ghouls and the occult then look no further. Hellsing has got you covered. Set in present day London, vampire Alucard (which is Dracula spelled backwards – mind blown!) works for Royal Order of Protestant Knights. Their mission is to defeat the undead and other supernatural forces of evil. Regards of being a horror anime, Hellsing goes down as one of my favourite anime series of all time.
This 13-episode series draws together lots of vampire lore with elements of Stoker’s novel, millennial Illuminati-style threats and quintessential gore to tantalize you.

BoogiePop Phantom – Series

Despite having a cute name, BoogiePop Phantom is one of the darkest and spookiest animes on the list. A series of murders takes place across an unnamed city in Japan. Rumours begin to arise of a mysterious entity known as Boogiepop. No one knows who or what she is or if she truly exists. The only known fact is that if you meet her in the night you will disappear. In this 12 episode series, you witness serial killers, aliens, clones, secret organization, drugs abuse, and the impermanence of memory. It is not an easy watch. However, if you’re looking for a real scare, I can’t recommend BoogiePop Phantom enough. (Although you should probably watch it with the lights on.)

Black Butler – Series

giphyBased on the popular manga series, Black Butler tells the story of Ciel, head of the Phantomhive noble family and his butler Sebastian. Sebastian is particularly skilful at his job, carrying out any task his master commands. However, Sebastian isn’t all what he seems – he’s the devil incarnate.
Although Black Butler is more of a comedy, it is not without its morose elements such as, the Victorian backdrop, evidence of the occult and (this is probably the selling point), the butler is a demon!

Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust  – Movie

Yes, another vampire anime but this is an excellent one. Meier Link, a powerful vampire, abducts the daughter of a wealthy family. Vampire Hunter D is hired to get her back at any cost. However, another group of bounty hunters, The Markus Brothers, are hell-bent on getting there first. While fighting the other hunters and Link’s minions, D also has to defeat an old nemesis from his past. Written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, Bloodlust is part horror, part western, part romance and part Sci-Fi. This flick combines the best of each genre as well as providing beautiful animation by Madhouse.

Another – Series

The story focuses on Kōichi Sakakibara, a 12 year old transfer student from Tokyo. Upon transferring to Yomiyama Middle School, he finds himself in a mystery involving his fellow students falling victim to gruesome and senseless deaths.
This 12 episode series has a truly gripping plot with stunning animation. This is the perfect choice this Halloween season.

Perfect Blue – Movie

Perfect Blue has been described as “Hitchcock partnered with Disney”. This couldn’t be more accurate. It’s suspenseful, gripping and downright terrifying.
The story revolves around Mima Kirigoe, a J-Pop singer recently turned actress. After publicly announcing her career change, she finds herself being stalked and abused by an obsessive fan. Directed by the late Satoshi Kon, this movie not only depicts a horrific and believable story but also gives a snapshot of how women are sexualized in the media.
