The Last of Usª Remastered_20140905150653
Ashley Gilbertson, a conflict photographer who has used his career to document the tragedies and horrors of war in areas like Iraq and the effects the war has had on the soldiers and their families – TIME  asked Gilbertson to take some time out of his schedule and his own projects to capture the world and the people from ‘The Last of Us‘. Gilbertson used ‘Photo Mode’ which allows players to pause the game, ‘set up’ their camera and capture their attempts to survive the zombie onslaught.
As well as capturing photos Gilbertson wrote about his experience playing the game:
after a short time playing it, I noticed I was having very strong reactions in regards to my role as the protagonist: I hated it. When I covered real war, I did so with a camera, not a gun. At home, I’d play for 30 minutes before noticing I had knots in my stomach, that my vision blurred, and then eventually, that I had simply crashed out. I felt like this could well be my last assignment for TIME.
He also went on to talk about how our time as gamers immersing ourselves in horrible worlds and situations like those ‘The Last of Us’ can and has desensitised many to real tragedies
I left the experience with a sense that by familiarizing and desensitizing ourselves to violence like this can turn us into zombies. Our lack of empathy and unwillingness to engage with those involved in tragedy stems from our comfort with the trauma those people are experiencing.
