According to Mr. Spock himself, Zachary Quinto, filming will begin within the next six months on Star trek 3.
“I think it’s on the horizon. Things are rumbling, so I have a feeling that we will be in production sometime in the next six months.”
The third installment of the rebooted franchise is likely to be set in outer space, at the beginning of the Enterprise and her crew and their five year mission to “boldly go where no one has gone before.”
Quinto said in back in July:
“I think the five-year mission will be a part of this next film in some way.”
J.J Abrams will not be returning to direct (he’s a little busy with another space opera).  Instead the reigns have been passed over to Roberto Orci, who will be making his directorial debut. He co-wrote the first two movies and is helping pen the newest chapter in the series.
Star Trek Into Darkness did well at the box office but received criticism for its similarity to Wrath of Khan.  When confronted by fans Robert Orci was less than pleased and lashed out online. however, it is unlikely this will affect the film’s dominance at the box when it is released.
Star Trek 3 is scheduled for release in 2016 to coincide with Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary.
