Margot Robbie in talks for Ghost in the Shell Role
The Wolf of Wall Street and former Neighbours star Margot Robbie is currently in talks to join the cast of Dreamwork’s live action plans for ‘Ghost in the Shell’. The movie is based off the iconic series of Manga novels by Masamune Shirow, the novels were an instant success gaining three feature Anime movies, two series spin-offs not to mention the video games, collectibles and figurines.
The project is being spearheaded by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) with a script developed by William Wheeler (The Hoax) – if you’re not entirely familiar with the series, GitS follows an elite unit of highly trained members whose sole task is to prevent cyber terrorism and capture those responsible. The series is lead by Major Motoko Kusanagi who becomes obsessed with a particular case and a hacker known as the ‘Puppeteer’, a terrorist who hacks the ‘ghosts’ of people with cybernetic implantations effectively taking control of them and forcing them to commit crimes.
It’s early days and Robbie is still in talks and there is no indication who she might be playing (one could hazard a guess that it’s for the lead role), the continued whitewashing of characters is putting a serious downer on productions like this – I’d rather not have ‘The Last Airbender’ scenario on my hands again!
