The much hyped Guardians of the Galaxy has managed to do quite well for itself with a whopping 11.2 million dollars taken opening night across the globe. This is not only the biggest opening night of 2014 (beating out Captain America: The Winter Soldier), but is also on set to be the biggest August opening weekend ever, surpassing The Bourne Ultimatum.

The James Gunn directed project has been one of the most talked about films of the year, with its slightly obscure heroes and wacky subject matter being the cause for much debate. That hasn’t stopped Marvel pushing the feature, however, considering they made sure the film opened in 42 markets last night, with the overall amount of theaters being expanded to 4,080 across the globe, beating G.I. Joe Rise of the Cobra’s record of 4,007.
