Wonder Trades or Blunder Trades?

Unless you’re living on the moon, you’ve probably own or have at least heard of Pokémon X and Y. X and Y introduced an interesting new feature called ‘Wonder Trade’, which lets you trade a Pokémon with a random player somewhere in the world. You choose what to send out and you won’t know what you’ll get in return. It sounds fun in theory, but when you’re sending out some pretty cool Pokémon and just getting Fletchlings and Caterpies in return, it can be a bit annoying.

So here it is, The Arcade’s simple guide to being a good guy on Wonder Trade!

1. Abilities

Every Pokémon has an ability. Some have ‘Levitate’, which means they can’t be hit with Ground moves. Some have ‘Inner Focus’, so they’ll never flinch. There are hundreds of these abilities, and some are rarer than others. These are known as ‘Hidden Abilities’. A hidden ability is a rare treat, and if you send out a Pokémon with one of these, there’ll be a happy trainer on the other end. If you’re unsure about if a Pokémon has its hidden ability or not, take a quick check on its entry on either Bulbapedia or Serebii.

Pro Tip: Pokémon found in the Friend Safari are more likely to have a hidden ability.

2. Egg Moves

Egg moves are moves that a Pokémon can’t normally learn, but can inherit from a parent Pokémon. An example would be Shinx with Fire Fang. Shinx doesn’t learn Fire Fang naturally, but if you breed a female Shinx/Luxio/Luxray with a male Arcanine that knowns Fire Fang, the baby Shinx will have Fire Fang. This is a simple thing you can do. As I said above, to find out what egg moves a certain Pokémon can inherit, check Serebii or Bulbapedia.

3. National Dex Entries

Bizarrely enough, Pokémon like Ratatta, Petilil, Seedot and many others of the kind, have become a rarity. They’re not available to catch in Kalos, so the only way to obtain them is to bring them forward from a previous generation. Breeding these now ‘rare’ Pokémon is a really nice thing to do as most people on the GTS are looking for legendaries in return.

Keep in mind, you will get some crappy stuff in return for your hard work. It’s always going to be the way. But if more and more people try to populate Wonder Trade with cool Pokémon, it’ll hopefully improve.

4. IV Markings

Another thing to note is always check the Pokémon you receive in a Wonder Trade. Sure, it may be your 5th Charmander today, but what if it has egg moves? Check their movesets and abilities, because you never know what you might get! Another thing to keep in mind is EV markings. If you play Pokémon casually, this won’t be of interest to you, but to competitive battlers, this is everything. Pokémon have these little symbols under their sprite when you check their summary. These refer to their IVs.

Some Pokémon you get in Wonder Trades will have perfect IVs in certain stats. IVs basically increase certain stats. Let’s take Charizard. With no IVs at lvl 50, Charizard’s Attack might be around 89. With perfect IVs in Attack, it would be 104. It’s all very complicated and it’s something we may cover at a later date, but for now, we’re just informing you that some Pokémon you get will have perfect or even just good IVs in certain stats. Here’s a quick guide for the symbols:

Circle: HP
Triangle: Attack
Square: Defense
Heart: Sp. Attack
Star: Sp. Def
Rhombus/diamond: Speed

So be a good trader. Don’t flood Wonder Trade with Fletchlings, Scatterbugs and Honedges. Get Karma on your side!
