What We Learned From That 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailer

imageSo yesterday we were treated to the Guardians of the Galaxy trailer and while it’s definitely Marvels biggest gamble to date, it’s looking like a success already. I’m about to ramble through some things I’ve spotted in the trailer and really out myself here as the giant nerd that I am in doing so, but honestly I think you’ll find they’ve really done their homework on the guardians going into this.

Infinity Gems: 20140221-010858.jpg
Ok anyone who saw the after credit scenes from Avengers and Thor: The Dark World knows that The Tessaract (Cosmic Cube) and the Aether are in fact Infinity Gems. The Collector (Benicio Del Toro) now has the Aether and intends to collect the remaining five. Well it would seem Peter Quill also finds an infinity gem – the orb from the opening shot and so Thanos tasks Ronan The Accuser with retrieving the gem. In the trailer we also get to see Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou) confronting Quill for the gem too.

20140221-010827.jpgThe Guardians:
We get our first real look at the team after they’re arrested by the Nova Corps on Xandar (which is the home of the Nova Corps). The Nova Corps are pretty much the S.H.I.E.L.D of outer space for anyone unfamiliar. Also, spot the Nova Corps helmet to the left of John C Reilly. It’s not said in the trailer itself but any self respecting Guardians fan will tell you that Gamora is the adopted daughter of Thanos and initially starts out as a kind of bounty hunter before switching teams. Now some of the attributes we may have missed from the Nova Corps scans are team are as follows;

Drax: Enhanced muscular structure, impact resistant skin, augmented cellular regeneration, species unknown.
Gamora: Ocular and respiratory implants, enhanced neurological system, cybernetic appendages and the last of her species.
20140221-010922.jpgRocket Raccoon: “Cybernetic/genetic experiment on a lower life form” He’s a talking raccoon wanted for 15 counts of arson. Associates are listed as Groot, and aAlilah who was a romantic interest from the comics. Nice nod.
Groot: From Planet X, basically a walking tree who can only say the words “I am Groot,” director James Gunn has said Groot is the only innocent of the team.
20140221-010937.jpgPeter Quill: He’s got a translator implant in his neck, so that explains all the English spoken in space. Listed under his associates you’ll see Yondu, now again eagle eyed Guardians fans will tell you in the comics that Yondu was a founding member of the original Guardians squad. So maybe he’ll play more of a mentor role here as he’s played by Michael Rooker of The Walking Dead. Also worth noting that Star Lord’s Walkman is his last real tether to Earth as Peter Quill is taken from earth as a child and grows up in space, that explains the 80’s mix tape and why it’s so important to Quill. Also featured so the Peter Quill’s ship the Milano.

20140221-011005.jpgThis trailer also gives us out first real look at Karen Gillan as
Nebula. (Whovians rejoice!) Nebula is also a daughter of Thanos and so we can expect tension between her and Gamora no doubt. Another first glimpse is Ronan the accuser (Lee pace) sporting his signature hammer and his ships the Necrocraft.

Guardians of the Galaxy opens August 1st.
