Pokémon Community: Look at my Hack!

For those of you who are playing Pokémon X and Y, I’m assuming you’ve at least attempted to try out the ‘Battle Spot’ and ‘GTS’. ‘Battle Spot’ is a feature that allows you to battle with other trainers all over the globe. It’s a fun, interactive activity that can really help you hone your skills, whenever someone isn’t shoving their shiny legendary in your face.

‘Battle Spot’ is divided into two ranks: Free battles and rating battles.

Free battles are exactly what they sound like. There are very little restrictions and no Pokémon are banned. A rating battle is for more experienced trainers. Legendaries are banned here. Now, I understand people saying ‘Oh, if you’re sick of legendaries, stick to rating battles!’. This is a very valid argument, but the people on rating battles are, as I said, experienced trainers. They all have their little tricks and gimmicks set up and it can be very intimidating for a new trainer.

SzPmRiIFor a long time now people have been complaining about being able to ‘hack’ a Pokémon into the game. For those who don’t know, it’s basically manipulating game code and creating whatever kind of Pokémon you want. Fancy a level 100, shiny Arceus? Hack it. The worst part is, people are still getting away with it. People are being allowed to use these Pokémon freely, trading them away and battling with them. How does that make us real trainers feel? Well, pretty good whenever we can destroy their legendaries with our well trained teams, but usually it just makes us feel like all our work is for nothing. People have been crying out to Game Freak to fix this, but there still hasn’t been any successful patches to prevent this happening.

This can get very problematic on the GTS. The GTS (Global Trade Station) is a network where you can trade with people around the world. All you do is deposit the Pokémon you want to trade and type in what you want in return. It’s a very efficient system except for one flaw; You can’t see the details of Pokémon other trainers have put up. You can see if they’re shiny, what their level is and if they have a nickname. That’s all. You can’t check stats, move-sets or if the Pokémon has been hacked or not. There are a couple of ways to tell if your Pokémon is hacked or not:

pokemon_x_y_pentagon– Marking: All Pokémon caught or bred in the Kalos region (X and Y) will have a small, blue pentagon symbol when you check their summaries.

Keep in mind: Pokémon brought forward from Pokébank and Pokétransporter will NOT have this pentagon due to the fact they were not caught or bred in the Kalos region. There are a couple of other ways that can help you tell if you’ve been given a hack, though.

Obviously Pokémon with impossible levels are hacks. An example would be a level 3 Arceus or a level 17 Lugia. These Pokémon could never be caught at those levels, so they’re hacks. You can sometimes see what ball a Pokémon has been caught in, and that can be very helpful. If you see a Mew/Victini/Manaphy or any other ‘event’ Pokémon in any ball other Cherish_Ballthan a ‘Cherish Ball’, they’re hacked. Event Pokémon are Pokémon there were never available to catch in the game, but were given away as part of a launch event. The list of event Pokémon are as follows:

Mew – Celebi – Jirachi – Deoxys – Manaphy – Darkrai – Shaymin – Arceus – Victini – Keldeo – Meloetta – Genesect

If any of these Pokémon are in anything other than a Cherish Ball, they’re not legitimate. There is no absolute concrete way to tell a Pokémon is hacked, but it can be fairly obvious once you look it over. Use your instincts. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

What can you do if you’re traded a hacked Pokémon? Nothing. That’s the short answer. A lot of players are calling for a feedback system, similar to that of eBay. If somebody trades you a hacked Pokémon, you could give them a negative rating and a short comment. It would help people a lot, I think. It would give trainers the chance to actually suss out their potential trade partner before trading, and if they’ve got a bad rep, you’d know to avoid trading with them. Personally, I think this would be an excellent idea and something that Game Freak should really look at installing.

Pokébank and Pokémon Transporter were designed to catch hacked Pokémon as they were being brought through but so far it’s been unreliable. I personally did an experiment to check if it worked. Due to a trade, I ended up with a hacked Victini in my ‘Pokémon White 2’ game. Needless to say, it made the transition into my current ‘Pokémon Y’ game through Pokébank.

Game Freak and Nintendo are working so hard on promoting connectivity but seem to be blatantly disregarding safety for trainers. Since your game is now always linked with an online account on the ‘Global Link’ (a website for registering for online events), it would be very easy for Game Freak to implement a ‘penalty system’ to users trading hacked Pokémon. Perhaps this could be a suspension from online activity or anything that would deter people from doing this.

Long story short, beware of hacked Pokémon. They are filtering through PokéBank and unfortunately, it’s not being stopped. Think before trading.
