We’ve been crying out since 2012 for there to be a follow-on from ‘Dredd’ and if we’re lucky, we might actually be seeing it! ‘Dredd’ was a flop at the box office but an absolute hit with the fan community. DVD and Blu-Ray sales were definitely what saved it and showed Lionsgate that there was a large fan-base for ‘Dredd’ and that a sequel may be plausible after all.
While attending a Star Trek convention in Germany, Karl Urban (who played Dredd), said that there have been conversations with screenwriter Alex Garland and Lionsgate about bringing a second chapter to life on the big screen. This is fantastic news for folks who loved the first movie, and for ‘2000AD’ fans everywhere. ‘Dredd’ wasn’t afraid to be a film geared for mature audiences. It was a serious Judge Dredd film, which the fans sorely needed. Stalone’s performance in ‘Judge Dredd’ was… less than stellar, we can all admit, and Urban was a bad-ass breath of fresh air, making Dredd a serious and darker character.
There’s no actual confirmation of a sequel thus far, only what Urban stated, but we can all but hope that we’ll get another awesome chapter in Mega-City One.
