It’s gloomy, it’s cold, it’s probably wet, and it’s definitely Monday BUT it’s also officially a month ’til Christmas, so it’s not all bad. Here are some tunes to help you shift those Monday blues while we wait for December to drop and we can finally sing Christmas songs without shame. Mereki – Blue Lake

Australian singer songwriter, Mereki, might not be on your radar yet but that’s probably about to change as 2014 is already looking to be a big year for her. Her latest offering, Blue Lake, is a laid back, sleazy slab of 80s-influenced electronica. Her smoky vocals cascade up and down a crunchy hip hop beat here, driven by some sweet distorted bass, mammoth tom hits and percussive synths. It’s an awfully cool affair and even has a totally-bad-ass guitar solo towards the end. If you dig that Real Hero tune from Drive, you’ve probably just found the soundtrack to the rest of your year in Blue Lake. Mereki is definitely one to watch in 2014.

Lily Allen – Somewhere Only We Know

Despite being the less in-your-face Lily Allen song released this month, her cover of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know is currently number one in the Irish charts. It’s not particularly hard to see why; it is after all the soundtrack to a Christmas ad that has gone viral recently: a perfect promotional storm if ever there was one. Lily Allen has never been anything short of exceptional, both as a vocalist and lyricist, and while she lends her innate respect for lyrical content to this cover, it’s her cheeky, conversational vocal style that really brings it to life in a way we haven’t heard before.

 Ayumi Hamasaki feat. m-flo – Merry-go-round

You’d almost be forgiven for forgetting about Ayumi Hamasaki these days. Despite being one of Japan’s most prominent and successful solo artists, she’s been off the grid for around three years now, enough time for Kyary to step in and mesmerize a whole new generation of J-pop fans. Well Ayumi, also known as Ayu, is finally making her return and her comeback song is pretty damn slick. Merry-go-round starts off sparse and ambient but everything changes when producer and guest rapper, m-flo, drops that four-on-the-floor beat. Since Sia spearheaded the whole ’emotional dance music’ thing with Titanium a while back there hasn’t really been anyone to carry the torch in her absence. If this track is anything to go by, Ayumi Hamasaki might just be the one to do it.
