Music Monday 1811

It’s Monday and you know what that means; yep, you’re either in work wishing you were at home or at home wishing you were in work. Either way take solace in the fact that no one is happy on Monday’s. Except maybe the international celebrities featuring in this piece, so let’s exploit their hard work and enjoy the fruits of their labours free of charge through social media. What a time to be alive.

T.O.P – Doom Dada

The lads from Big Bang, Korea’s answer to the ‘how-to-make-a-boyband-not-shit’ question that the western world has struggled with since N*Sync disbanded, have been very busy lately. G-Dragon and Taeyang have both released solo singles in the last month or so and the group have just embarked on a Japanese stadium tour. Add T.O.P to that list, who just last week dropped this absolute monster, Doom Dada. It’s slick and strange with a creepy rhythmic refrain and T.O.P’s rapping in its latter half is so impossibly brilliant that you can only hope every other MC is taking notes. G-Dragon may the flashier of Big Bang’s hip hop duo, but with Doom Dada T.O.P once again proves he is the one you should really be listening to.

Echoes – Fight The Feeling

The 80s comeback was just on the verge of tapering off recently, then Chvrches came along and reminded us all that that meant it would be time to re-embrace the 90s and oh how quickly we returned to the warm embrace of our neon leg warmers. London 3 piece, Echoes, are flying the 80s flag proudly, so proudly that you could be forgiven for thinking their latest single, Fight the Feeling, just found its way out of some sort of time capsule fresh from 1985. Thankfully, it’s catchy enough to be mistakenly credited to the better of the throwback acts, Human League, Yazoo etc., but that dual vocal will go a long way towards carving their name well into your brain. Let it happen, despite what they’d have you believe, you can’t fight the feeling.

We Cut Corners – YKK

If you’re a little disillusioned with Irish music, there’s no better cure than this Dublin two piece, We Cut Corners. Their debut album, Today I Realized I Could Go Home Backwards, was one of the best Irish albums of the last 5 years, possibly ever, and they are finally poised to make a comeback this year with the release of their new single, YKK, next week. Thankfully you don’t have to wait ’til then to find out just how eagerly you await their new album, as YKK is up on their label’s soundcloud and ready to please your ears right now. If guitar driven indie-rock with razor sharp wit and tight harmonies are your thing, We Cut Corners are about to spoil you.
