Let’s do the Time Warp Again

It was 1975 when an underground movie challenging conventions gathered attention. In 1996, that same movie changed me…for good or bad I haven’t decided yet but I have enjoyed and continue to enjoy the experience that is the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Brad Majors and Janet Weiss are two young lovers who find themselves engaged and wanting to share their news with an old friend and the man who brought them together in his class. However fate has something else in store when the lovebirds find themselves lost and with a broken down car, they seek shelter in an old castle but are soon surprised to find that the people living there aren’t really people at all. Now players in the twister Dr. Frank-n-Furter’s experiments they begin to learn more about themselves and each other than they could have imagined and if they are not careful it’s more than hearts they will be breaking. The Rocky Horror Picture Show stars Tim Curry as the enigmatic eccentric Dr. Frank-n-Furter, Richard O’Brien as Riff Raff the tortured butler and Susan Sarandon as the naive Janet.

It is no secret that the sweet transvestite from Transylvania challenges the conventional cinematic experience; Brad and Janet found that out the hard way! This is what America experienced in 1975, sending a shock wave in a time when the counterculture of anti-materialism free love, recreational drugs and general hippy vibes was being turned into a culture of feigned fantasy and skeptical sexuality, a culture many could argue we live in today.

In the beginning, the Rocky Horror wasn’t a success, it was released in 1975 and most cinemas who screened it only managed to draw small audiences with some theatres deciding to not show it at all. It wasn’t until a year later when a cinema in New York decided to have a midnight screening and something new was born out of the celluloid, fishnets and makeup. Something was changing the audience and by 1978 there were regular if not weekly screenings of the movie all over the US with people showing up in costume, talking back to the characters and screenings and performing along with the musical numbers and dance routines. Since then the Rocky Horror Picture Show has become the longest running release in the history of cinema with 20th Century Fox refusing to pull it and cinemas/theatres all over the world still playing it. However it’s fan-base began to dwindle and the fad became something of a memory with only a few die hard fans clinging on to red velvet curtains and their top hats!

So with that in mind we could maybe find a reason behind its decline in recent years. I, for example, found myself playing the only Janet in Ireland for a brief time during my college years. However as I watched the growing audience I was hit by something, and it wasn’t just the toast! Somehow The Rocky Horror Picture Show has defied the decline and epitomizes its motto “don’t dream it be it” because it really is the event that keeps on giving.

You see all my unconventional conventionists it’s the audience that makes this show what it truly is. There’s nothing like throwing toast at the performers to give audience participation like no other. Transvestites and virgins converge at the Rocky Horror Picture Show, all wigs and stilettos, suspenders, corsets and fishnets. And that’s just the men. All of you virgins to Rocky Horror don’t yet know the true experience unless you have witnessed Rocky Horror in all its stage and cinematic glory.

Newbies or ‘virgins’ are welcomed with roars of approval while the enthusiastic actors re-enact scenes under the roars and taunts of the public. The experience is relentless in its props, enthusiasm and appeal and this is why it continues to reign as a cult classic.

But this is just a humble ‘whore’s’ opinion (whore=someone who’s watched and taken part in the experience ye dirty people!!!). Don’t believe me? Well why not experience it yourself in the Sugar Club on October the 27th and “give yourself over to absolute pleasure. Swim the warm waters of sins of the flesh –erotic nightmares beyond any measure, and sensual daydreams to treasure forever. Can’t you just see it? Don’t dream it, be it.”
