In a recent interview Geijutsu Shincho magazine Otomo-san dropped some hints on one of his upcoming projects, This time a Manga set in the Meiji period (1868-1912 essentially the time period of Japan leaving an isolationist fuedalistic society into it’s more modern incarnation) Very little details were given apart from the time period and it will be a shonen Manga.
This will be his first outing into a long form manga since his iconic eight year run on Akira, which spawned the movie that introduced generations of western audiences to what anime is. Since Akira he has written and drawn some shorter manga he has also been involved in writing and directing on the big screen. No matter what else his return to manga brings it will is going to look amazing, the man certainly knows his craft.
