Game of Thrones S7 E5 ‘Eastwatch’ Review

Following the intensity of last week’s Game of Thrones episode, I was hopeful for this latest one. Unfortunately for me, it wasn’t as exciting and with only 2 more episodes left this season I am a little worried as to where this season will end.

This episode did have quite a few surprises mind you so I wasn’t too disappointed.

*Spoilers Ahead*

Like father like daughter

I was not shocked in any way to see that Jaime survived his encounter with Drogon thanks to Bronn. I was a bit annoyed that he wasn’t captured though, I mean surely there would be men patrolling to find any survivors? Apparently not. Surely Tyrion would want to know if his brother was really dead! Though he did have a walk-about after the carnage, so perhaps that’s what he was doing. Although whether he would have handed his brother over to his queen remains to be seen.

Dany does something in this episode that contradicts what she said to Jon; Daenerys said she wasn’t like her father, yet she still burnt both Randal and Dickon Tarly alive. I don’t know about you, but that had a touch of ‘Mad King’ flair to it. I understand that they didn’t want to bend the knee, but to roast them alive as punishment seems a bit extreme.

Surprise!

Gendry is back! Gendry is one of those characters that stuck with viewers of the show for a long time. He was a decent guy who was put through the ringer but the last time we saw him he was rowing away from it all. There have been so many memes and jokes about this, so seeing Davos make a joke along these lines to welcome him back was a very nice touch.

It turns out that Gendry was hiding out in King’s Landing. Since Joffrey is dead, it made perfect sense to go back to where he grew up to hide in plain sight. Seeing him come back was a high point in the episode for me. I’m curious to see what he will bring to the story, but I’m hopeful he won’t just be a filler character. That scene with Jon Snow was so reminiscent of Ned and Robert, so I’m very excited to see their relationship develop.

Dead men walking

Bran aka The Three Eyed Raven sees the army of the dead marching very close to East Watch. He does the right thing and sends ravens everywhere. Whether or not Cersei and the general people take the news seriously seems to be down to an extremely risky idea to bring a Wight to Kings Landing to prove that they exist.

I can see why they would think this is a good idea, but they don’t have a lot in terms of numbers and they are going beyond the wall. They are going to lose people and with Gendry just returning to the show, I hope he survives. However, that last scene where they look boss as hell walking into the snow storm fills me with confidence. Somebody needs to create a montage to the song of ‘X Gone Give It To Ya’. Oh look, it’s already happened:

Hey LISTEN!

As much as I love Samwell Tarly, he can be a bit of an idiot at times. Gilly just dropped a major bombshell of a secret and he didn’t even bat an eyelid. Mind you, he obviously doesn’t know how this is connected to everything else but he could have seemed a bit more interested. Granted, he is super frustrated about the Maesters in the citadel not taking him seriously, but this is some groundbreaking news because if anyone else knew this they would know the legitimacy of Jon’s claim to the throne.

Considering Bran has seen everything that has ever and can see what is to come I hope this is what he intends to tell Jon if they ever reunite!

Game of Cat and Mouse

Arya is good at what she does. There is no denying that at all. However, she seems to be getting a little ahead of herself. No matter how sneaky you think you are, you can never out-sneak Littlefinger or Varys. The only way you can catch Littlefinger is if he wants to get caught and if it helps him reach his goal.

In this case, he seems adamant to sew the seeds of distrust amongst the Stark siblings. The letter Arya finds in his quarters in not new, it’s actually really old since it mentions both Robb, Robert and Ned, but it might just be enough to form a wedge between Arya and Sansa. For the time being, he seems to have dismissed Bran and is toying with Arya. His motives for doing this are not transparent just yet, but I have a feeling he wants Sansa to be the one in charge so he can worm his way to her side.

Family Drama

Tyrion meets Jaime face to face for the first time in a long time and doesn’t try to kill him. Which is always a good sign. Jaime loves his sister but he still cares for his younger brother in some capacity, so there was hope that he might leave Cersei if she got too crazy. That was, however, until Cersei announced that she is pregnant. I would typically say congratulations, but we’ve all seen what happened her children. She’s not exactly mammy of the year.

Cersei also wants to let people know that Jaime is the father of the child. I like to think this might undermine her claim to the throne but the Targaryans, back in the day, were no strangers to incest themselves. Overall I think Cersei being pregnant will either make her super careful about the actions she is going to take next or it will make her more determined than ever to hold onto the throne for the Lannister heir.

Worth remembering

The witches prophecy when Cersei was a girl said: “The king will have 20 children and you will have three. Gold will be their crowns . . . gold their shrouds.” So although this is looking like her 4th pregnancy, chances are it will not end well for her. Or, of course, she could be lying to Jaime just to strengthen his loyalty to her. I wouldn’t put it past her!
