So Beyond Good & Evil 2, the game most of us had given up on ever seeing. Its announcement at E3 2017 was likely bittersweet for some. The game is in development, but nowhere near the end of it. According to series creator Michel Ancel, the engine has taken three years to develop. With the game only starting full development recently.

You can see the full 14-minute tech demo here, and it does look mighty impressive;

So should I be excited for this or not?

To sum the video up, the game will feature planets in a solar system that you can freely travel. Each planet will rotate on its axis and will orbit around the sun as planets do. There’ll be a healthy dose of procedural generation in the game due to the scope of this world. The scale of the world shown is interesting, providing it’s not empty or boring one the game releases.

However, there’s been a bit of a division of opinion from this video. A few of the things that have been talked about in relation to BG&E2 have given some people flashbacks to the build up of No Man’s Sky.  This tech demo did settle some of the fears I had about this, but they’re not gone entirely. It feels like BG&E2 might be aiming a bit too high. I hope I’m wrong with this, but I’ll be watching these development updates with a doubtful eye.

However the structure of these, Ancel talking about what they want to do and then showing it working in the engine. I find that really refreshing, and surprising coming from Ubisoft. I hope the future videos about the game all follow this structure.
