I went to see Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 over the weekend and while I really enjoyed the film, I fell madly in love with the soundtrack; ‘Mr. Blue Sky’, ‘Fox On The Run’, ‘Father And Son’, and ‘Brandy’ to name but a few of the featured tracks. The headline is this: the soundtrack is phenomenal.

While in some ways Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is maybe inferior to Vol. 1, it does feature one of my personal favourite songs of all time. And that song shall be our track of the day: ‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac.

‘The Chain’ is track seven from Fleetwood Mac‘s multi-platinum selling 1977 masterpiece, Rumours. Aside from the fact that as a musical composition ‘The Chain’ is a timeless masterpiece, the environment in which it was conceived is fascinating.

Aside from the band’s infamous drug use over this period, it was the interpersonal relationships of the band members that set the stage for the creation of Rumours; Drummer Mick Fleetwood’s wife at the time was cheating on him with ex-Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Weston, singer Christine McVie and bassist John McVie were going through a divorce, worsened by Christine dating the band’s then lighting director. And this was all topped off by the implosion of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks‘ relationship. The ending of their relationship was further complicated by Nicks beginning a relationship with Mick Fleetwood.

Why is the disintegration of the band member’s personal lives so interesting, you ask? Well, against the backdrop of all the strife going on in their lives, Fleetwood Mac managed to create an amazing song filled with hope and togetherness. That’s what ‘The Chain’ is all about.

The song’s ending refrain “Chain keep us together, running in the shadows” has garnered special significance in my life as it serves as a message of hope. When life has you at your lowest, keep your loved ones close as it is your bond with them that will see you through.

Check out the song below, and while you’re at it, watch Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and listen to Rumours by Fleetwood Mac once you’re finished.
