The Oh So Small (OSS) agency has officially announced that their client, Jimmy Vee has taken over the role of R2-D2 in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. R2-D2 was portrayed by the legendary Kenny Baker since 1977, but sadly he passed away last August at the age of 81.

Jimmy Vee worked with Kenny Baker on Star Wars: The Force Awakens where he learned all the idiosyncrasies of playing R2-D2. Jimmy released a statement revealing what an honour it was to work with Kenny and to take over such a legendary role.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside the legendary Kenny Baker. Kenny was a fantastic actor and taught me all the ‘tricks’ on how he brought R2-D2 to life which I will continue to portray in his honour. I’m so excited to be a part of the Star Wars universe and can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working so hard on for the last year.”

Jimmy Vee has previously been in episodes of Doctor Who, including famously playing Bannakaffalatta in the Christmas episode ‘Voyage of the Damned’. He also has played in the Harry Potter franchise as one of the Gringotts Goblins.

I was under the impression that Jimmy Vee had already taken over the role of R2-D2 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Obviously Jimmy was just working with Kenny Baker and learning the role. With all that in mind, I am perfectly fine with Jimmy taking over the role. It is also great to know that he is going to do his best to honour Kenny with his performance.
