It most likely isn’t news to fans of the MCU at this point that the antagonist in 2018’s upcoming Avengers: Infinity War is going to be none other than Marvel’s intergalactic arch-villain, Thanos.
However, in a recent interview with movie news site Collinder, Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige revealed that Josh Brolin‘s Thanos has a much bigger part in Infinity War than fans originally expected, despite the film’s already all-star Marvel superhero cast.
Feige said: “Thanos in Infinity War is – in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War.”
A film centering around a member of Marvel’s villains is somewhat of a departure for Marvel Studios. Up until now, the films that make up the MCU continuity have only centered around one or more of Marvel’s many superheroes.
This could signal an exciting new direction for the MCU if Marvel Studios are indeed willing to take the risk and give movie-goers films from the villain’s perspective. Can superhero film fans imagine a film staring Loki for instance? Do we as fans dare to dream? Marvel Studios aren’t taking much of a risk going this route with Infinity War, in my opinion, when you have Oscar nominee, Josh Brolin, as the main name on the marquee.
I for one am very excited for the next chapter in the Avengers saga and the first of two Infinity War films. With the infinity gems under the protection of many of Marvel’s heroes, it will be interesting to see how Thanos is going to lay his hands on them. Either way we will need to wait until Avengers: Infinity War hits theatres in 2018!
