8 90s Shows That Helped Form Me As An Adult

Some say it was the 60s! Others the 70s! Many believe it’s the 80s! Here right now, let’s make one thing abundantly clear, the 90s shows were the best!

No other generation knows or ever will know how to make reruns cool! Now what follows may not make your top X of anything ever but for me, there is no getting away from the rewatch factor of any of these fine television programmes!

Will & Grace

Anyone who tells you that Will & Grace is awful should be cut from your life! Just cut them right out! With more sass, booze and bitchiness than Christmas with my family, the series was a barrel of laughs. While it was a comedy at heart, that didn’t stop this sitcom from hitting the feels button. As a pre-teen watching a show about two openly gay men living normal (but fabulous) lives really helped me come to terms with my own sexuality. It also showed me not to take it so seriously; it was only part of who I am!

Oh I also learned that cocktails taste better with a dash of bitchy banter!

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

I read the title of the series and I can’t help but hum the theme song in my head! Buffy fans cheered, laughed, cried and we even danced that one time! For me it was/is the ultimate teen sitcom. I didn’t have a Dawson! I didn’t have a Felicity! I had Buffy and the Scooby Gang and they kicked the crap out of evil! So they were infinitely better than all other teenagers played by 20 something year olds on TV.

Sabrina The Teenage Witch

persuasive-1434990718Speaking of teenagers! There was always that one show that you watch and secretly hope to be pulled into the TV by! For me that has always been Sabrina The Teenage Witch.

Not because of the magic mind you! Okay some of my reasons are magic related! It’s also not because of Salem! Although I have always wanted a smarmy, sarcastic feline friend! No, it’s because Sabrina always got through some terrible times with nothing more than dumb luck, her personality and okay… magic!

It just makes everything easier!

Batman: The Animated Series

I don’t care if you didn’t have a TV growing up! I don’t care if you were/are more of a Marvel fan! If you didn’t watch Batman: The Animated Series as a child then your childhood memories are defunct. It was more than a cartoon. It offered real drama and action. When many of us were still too young to watch the movies, TAS offered us a window into Batman’s life.

Daria

I never got Daria! Truth be told I only ever watched it because everyone in school watched it! Don’t tell them that though! In fact forget you read that last part! I love Daria and all of her whacky high school friends! Daria feels a lot like Frasier to me; everyone thought it was good, so you have to too! Otherwise you’re not smart enough to get it!

The X-Files

First up on the TV shows that gave me nightmares! I knew my parents thought I was mature and responsible when I was allowed stay up late on Sundays (9pm!). Right after the family had suffered another episode of Glenroe I was allowed switch to Sky and have my time with Dana and Mulder.

It made me want to be an FBI agent! It made me want to hunt (and then run away from) aliens and the truth! While most kids were playing Power Rangers, I was playing FBI agent Scully!

Friends

The other television show I never quiet got but have still numbed my brain with. Friends, is one of those shows that burrowed it’s way into our lives. An iconic sitcom, it showed an idealistic look at young adult life. It never mentioned the bills, rent, responsibilities and pains of relationships. Well it did, but it made it seem fun!

Unsolved Mysteries

The other television show to terrify my childhood. I didn’t know what paranoia was until I watched this show! If a 10 year old ever needs convincing the world is a horrifying place; put episodes of Unsolved Mysteries. Serial killers, monsters, unexplained disappearances and that’s just the first 15 minutes. Throw in Robert Stack walking through some foggy alleyway as a cutaway and you’ve scarred that kid for life! I know I am!

I’m pretty confident there’ll be something on this list to satisfy all taste! If I got it wrong or you want to add to the list, let me know in the comments below!
