Crappy Costumes – Back Issues

As an avid reader of comics for more than a decade, I’ve seen my fair share of crappy costumes; dodgy masks, vibrant capes and dodgy flares. There have been some real stinkers through the years!

Many costumes can be drab, uninspired and often fade into the background, but there are plenty of iconic characters who are defined by their costumes, outfits even a casual comic reader would recognise. However, just because they’re well known and colourful doesn’t mean they’re good costumes.

In this week’s Back Issues I’ll look at 5 examples of costumes that characters shouldn’t be seen dead in.

Captain America

I get why he was created as a character, his mass success and why he wears an American Flag as an outfit (frankly, it’d be impossible to find accessories for that thing!), but there is no excusing Cap’s boot flares and little head wings. No matter how likeable his character is, they’re just terrible.

Batman

Does anyone remember the time Batman embraced patterns and had a zebra-print suit? No? Did you purge that from your memory like me? Here’s a happy reminder that the Caped Crusader wasn’t always so slick with his fashion choices…

Ahem… also this…

Aquaman

Aquaman doesn’t have the best outfits at the best of times (seriously… green and orange…) but dressing up as a Bebo skin really did him no favours in the popularity polls.

Wonder Woman

I don’t want to say that Wonder Woman looked like Kylie Jenner during her ‘mod’ makeover of the 70s, but… she looked like Kylie Jenner. If you don’t know who this person is (lucky you!), she’s one of the Kardashian brood.

The Invisible Woman

Well she certainly wasn’t invisible while wearing this monstrosity! How anyone gave the green light on this one is beyond me but there was a point in comics history where Sue Storm wore what is essentially lingerie as her outfit. Not that that’s anything new in comics, but what made hers unique is the ostentatious ‘4’ cutout over her breasts. For comfort, obvs.
