Welcome anime fans far and wide to the latest instalment of Otaku Digest, we are still wading our way through the spring season here with quite a few titles still to sit and ponder but the summer season really is coming up fast with less than a month to go before the first episode’s air in Japan. Something I have noticed is that there are more and more rehashes of older anime coming to the forefront in new seasons with the summer season premiering Berserk and another adaptation of D Gray Man coming our way which in a way is fantastic for newer anime fans to be introduced to older series. On the other hand, will these anime keep true to the source material and even do a better job as a rehash? What do you all think? More reboots or more new ideas?

For now however let’s just unto this week’s instalment with our weekly anime titles of Mayoiga and KUROMUKURO.

Mayoiga

First this week we have the mystery anime Mayoiga  or The Lost Village that was adapted from the manga called Mayoiga: Tsumi to Batsu or The Lost Village: Crime and Punishment which originally aired on April 1. How far would you go to chase an urban legend? This anime introduces us to 30 young women and men who have chosen to go on the ominous bus tour. The destination? A mysterious possible non-existent village which is called Nanakimura. This village is said that a person can live a utopian life where you are free of tribulations of the world, could it be true or just another legend? The bus tour travels deep into the mountains with the 30 individuals who all carry their own anticipations of the tour.

Will the village Nanakimura hold all that the 30 need to heal their wounded hearts. They arrive to the empty village which still has the feel of life but it is drifting away.

This anime did not waste anytime jumping into the story with an opening very reflective of that of being on an actual tour bus with an overly zealous tour guide who is as shifty as a wolf among sheep and then came the introductions. So there are 30 people on this tour and the anime decided to introduce each and every one on the first five minutes, to be very honest some of them I forgot instantly and only really remembered the ones that were slightly eccentric. This anime is taking a risk having so many characters in the narrative at once but from just the introductions each one seems to have their own inner narrative as well as the main story, even if some may fly under the radar not being as outlandish as others.

This episode was mainly exposition for the characters more than anything else with quite a lot of dialogue between the characters developing their personalities out more. There is a constant ominous feel running throughout the episode but it fails to fully deliver the mystery needed to hook a viewer in a series like this. There are some interesting visuals and random moments in the episode but they are few and far between.

Will I Continue to Watch: Yes just to see if more mystery builds in episodes to come

KUROMUKURO

Next we have KUROMUKURO a mecha and action anime which first began on April 7. We are taken to the time of the construction of the Kurobe Dam where an ancient mysterious artefact is found, this was the founding of the Kurobe Research Institute by the United Nations. The artefact has attracted academics from around the world to study it dragging along their children in the process. These children then attend the Mt. Tate International Senior High School, among them is Yukina Shirahane the daughter of the Institutes head master, one day when visiting the artefact she accidentally touches and somewhat activates it, awakening a samurai from his cryostasis.

Another day and here we have another mecha anime but I have to say this one I have actual hope for since it has not hinged itself on some crutch to be similar to the Gundam series but has taken a more Escaflowne type route even though it has used the school genre in their it still has promise. Spanning over two timelines with a more samurai based mecha going by that opening could lead into a very interesting series. The action scenes were well times and animated to perfection with the individual mechas being very interesting in their own right.

At first I am not going to lie I really did not like the main character Yukina, she is first off made out to be a clumsy and overly imaginative high school student who because of who her mother in is the UN she is expected to be so much more that what she thinks she is. As the episode went on you see that it actually does affect her and makes her very uncomfortable to even be around those who work with her mother. I actually look forward to seeing her developed more as the series progresses and where the story takes her and the awoken samurai Kennosuke. Speaking of, there was not too many comedy moments in this anime but the animation excellence in how they kept that naked samurais bits out of the shot was both excellently and hilariously done.

Will I Continue to Watch: Yes, I think the series could develop nicely with interesting characters and plot
