Welcome one and all to the latest instalment of Otaku Digest, we are June and heading quickly for the summer season in little over a month where there are definitely some interesting titles coming up but the spring season has definitely set a high bar for it to reach. There has been some very interesting titles this season making it very enjoyable to watch the new series that have been released even if there has been a hilarious amount of slice of life anime this season.

For now we are back to the spring season and this week’s line up of Joker Game and Kiznaiver.

Joker Game

First this week we have the military, seinen and historical anime Joker Game, taking us to a very real time of the world, which first aired on April 5. Set in the year 1937 before the break of World War II the D Agency is formed by Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki of the Imperial Japanese Army. An intelligence outfit that is under his guidance and command while Lieutenant Sakuma is placed to observe the unit performance by the Army General Staff.

The recruitment goes far beyond the Japanese military workforces establishing the tenets which are against the IJA dogma of “Don’t Kill, don’t get killed, don’t get captured”. This D Agency take part in missions which can be both against foreign and domestic influences.

Usually I try not to get excited about titles that are set for release each season but ever since I heard about this anime I have been genuinely excited to see it which is odd considering I usually do not like “period” type anime but the entire premise and espionage feel to this anime intrigued me. From the get go this anime had all the right touched for a period and spy type anime with simple but effective animation where none of the characters or surrounding pull focus like in other anime. What really sells this anime from the beginning is the ambience it had in it, there is a constant dark and psychological feel to it where you are not sure what exactly is coming.

Although the episode could be considered slow and a rather talky anime there is very easy to follow pace to it along with the constant unease to what could happen is a recipe of perfection. The episode perfectly introduces the individual agents although never really explaining anything about them. Lastly the fact it is set in an actual period of time helps base the things they say about the war and such into reality.

Will I Continue to Watch: A little slow but definitely worth sticking with.

Kiznaiver

Next this week we have the sci-fi title Kiznaiver which originally began airing on April 9. Jumping to a different genre of anime entirely from our first entry we are brought to the fictitious Japanese City called Sugomori that has been built up on reclaimed land even though as the years pass by the population of the city is diminishing. One day Sonosake a seemingly ordinary school girl is told by Katsuhira, her classmate that she has been selected to be a Kiznaiver.

This is the Kizuna System, this lets Katsuhira to share his wounds connecting him to those of his classmates whose lives and personalities differ from his own. Connecting the people of the city through wounds is an imperfect system which was set in motion for the execution of world peace as when one of those connected is wounded in any way the system spreads the wounds through all those that have been connected.

Those who have been connected through the wounds of the Kizuna System are known as Kiznaivers.

That opening, well played anime you captured my attention. Yes nothing huge happened but anyone who says that animation or uncomfortable scene was not completely gripping is mad. I originally was not excited about this anime since it just felt like a rehash of other ideas done to death but after that opening scene and the opening theme gave me hope for what was to come.

Something that stood out to me instantly was the character design in this anime, it was very unique in how it made the characters nearly entirely two dimensional against a more three dimensional back ground design. Not only is this but the character designs for each and every character are so individual in their own right which only enhanced the viewing experience. The episode itself was slow getting around to actually explaining the premise of the anime which was refreshing since it actually took the time to introducing us to our protagonist and giving us a basis for why he is the way he is. Although a little slow in the sense of getting to the point and a little talky in parts this anime is animated beautifully and every scene is truly gorgeous and seems to have actual thought put into them.

Will I Continue to Watch: Yes, it is beautiful with an actually interesting premise.
