If you thought A Song of Ice and Fire was a long sequence, prepare yourself as Robert Jordan’s sprawling 14 book fantasy series The Wheel of Time is making its way to the television. Jordan’s widow and editor Harriet McDougal recently announced that The Wheel of Time will become a “cutting edge TV series!” and that we should “Look for the official announcement coming soon from a major studio”.
It’s hard to deny that this is due to the successful television adaptation of A Game of Thrones. Jordan was a contemporary, friend and inspiration to George R.R. Martin and his books are beloved in the fantasy community. Sadly, Jordan passed away in 2007 and the final three novels were completed by acclaimed fantasy author and series fan Brandon Sanderson.
Jordan’s estate had recently been embroiled in a battle with Red Eagle Entertainment last year after they filmed and aired a pilot episode for a potential series without their permission. When McDougal issued a statement of her disapproval and claimed she had no knowledge of the production, Red Eagle Entertainment threatened to sue her for slander, a lawsuit which was eventually withdrawn. With the legal issues seemingly cleared, production can begin on the show.
With the high that fantasy is currently riding The Wheel of Time show has the potential to push the crest of the wave even higher, and vault Robert Jordan’s books into the popular culture. With 14 books to get through that means we’ve got 14 series of deadly magic, prophecies and braid tugging. Exciting times are coming.
