Given that everyday is bringing us closer and closer to the Deftones record Gore, I’ve been listening to nothing but the ‘Tones since the album’s reveal announcement. They’re a band who are really worth revisiting every so often, reminding one’s self of just how distinct and incredible they are.
‘Sextape’ is one of the best individual case studies on why the Deftones are just that good of a band. The marriage of the slow, glassy ambiance with the video’s literal fluidity create the kind of wandering audio-visual not many bands bother with any more.
The album the track hails from, Diamond Eyes, has its own slabs of savagery for sure. But I always find myself returning for this song in particular. The way it worms into the ear-drum is a credit to how the band approach music. Even when it gets a little heavier and the chorus kicks in, the overall flighty nature of the tempo gives a feeling akin to that of a bird spreading its wings. Soaring, well and truly.
