In my last cosplay  piece we looked at eyeliners and brow pencils to give you that on-fleek look. This one is all about that pout, the perfect lip.

With everything else done and dusted, the last pieces of you look will add dimension, highlights, shadows, subtle colouring and plump luscious lips.

Lips are one of the most noticeable features on a face,  whether they are full, plump, small, flat or straight up non existent; chances are someone has noticed them.

Luckily there are so many different options when it comes to modifying your lips with makeup.  Doing my lips isn’t on the top of my priorities when I am doing my makeup unless the look revolves around a new lippy. I am fortunate enough that I can slap on some lip liner, put on some lipstick and I’m done.

There are a selection of products you can use for giving your lips that plumpness. Mostly these products make the lips swell to give you that puffiness. The products here are recommendations from people who have used products like these. For the love of whomever you believe in, do NOT suck into shot glasses or do anything that resembles the Kylie Jenner challenge. This can cause severe damage to your lips and should be avoided.

Lip plumpers come with all sorts of ingredients so do a test before you apply. If you do not react badly apply a little at a time. More does not mean a better affect. Most lip plumpers leave a glossy effect so be cautious before for decide. You can get lip glosses with plumpers and stand alone plumpers. There are multiple home remedies out there for the same effect but I prefer items that are tested especially when it comes to cosmetics.

Lip Plumpers

Soap and Glory (Sexy Mother Pucker) – €13.50

Smashbox O-Plump – €23.00

There are not many cheap options available, but to me, that makes sense. You get what you pay for. Again pay very close attention to the signals your skin is sending. If the tingling sensation gets too uncomfortable for you then stop.

Do not hesitate to remove the gloss or treatment, you could be having an allergic reaction.

Aside from cosmetic plumpers, there are devices that help you create a full lip with the help of suction. There are many imitations of the originals but these few are some of the most trusted brands when it comes to these tools. Never apply too much suction as this could damage the tissue in your lips causing permanent damage and/or bruising.

They take time to get a hang of, so practice what technique works best for you. You may not get it right the first time, so practice before you use for the purpose of a cosplay. Do a test, take some selfies, get a feel for how they feel and look.

The effect of these varies from person to person.

Lip Plumping Devices

Full Lips – $19.99

Candy Lips – $69.99 – $119.99

Please DO NOT use shot glasses, bottle caps or any makeshift thing that you assume will do. The devices can cost a pretty penny but they are reusable and much safer.

If you want to avoid the lip plumper route you can always over line your lips. My lips are full and I never need to over draw them and making them appear smaller is a difficult task. But I have had experience with filling out the lips of those who are going for that sort of appearance. Knowing how much to over draw your lips before it starts to look a bit much for you is part of the trouble.

Take it slowly and do your first outline in a fairly neutral colour. The Nyx wonderpencil is ideal here. If you are happy with how it looks fill the base with the lip liner for the colour you want to use. To give your lips a more natural look once you are mostly done then comes the magic. Contouring!

For contouring I would go with a lip liner a shade or two darker than the lipstick you want to use. Most lip liners come in a matte finish which is great because they are designed to eliminate the bleeding of lipstick. There are also colour-free ones in case you don’t find a shade that suits it.

Lip Liners

Wet’N’Wild – €1.49

NYX – €4.25

L’Oreal – €5.79

M.A.C – €17.00

My latest obsession is going to be the death of my bank account, but the sheer number of brands that provide lipsticks is staggering. Finding the finish for you can be a long journey. Only recently with the rise of the matt lip did I find where my heart truly belonged. Not all lipsticks were created equal.

Some can be super creamy, moisturising, drying, glittery. You name it, you can find it.

Lip Sticks ( Shine/ Gloss/ Creamy)

NYX – €7.75

Revlon Super Lustrous – €10.79

M.A.C – €20

Lip Sticks ( Matte )

Sleek Matte Me – €6.49

NYX Matte Lip Cream – €11

Melt Cosmetics – € 19

M.A.C – €20

Lip Stain

Benefit – €6.50

Stila – €8.67

Revlon Colorstay – €10.99

Lips are not always a major focus in a lot of cosplays but when they are, they are either nice and neutral, or bursting with colour. Lots of brands like Melt Cosmetics, OCC, Dose of Colors, Lunatick Cosmetic Labs and many more. Even if you don’t have a matching lip liner and you have an eyeliner that does match, use it!

A versatile makeup bag is definitely worth the research and time you put into it.
