Back in April, show producer Brian Grazer stated that Arrested Development would return for 17 episodes and that production was set to begin on January 1 2016. However, new details emerged in an interview with Grazer for CNNMoney. During the interview, it was revealed that the writers would approach the show from a new planning direction.

Rather than trying to fit the existing plot to an exact number of episodes, as most series tend to do, the team behind Arrested Development will now be writing the show as they want it and fitting the episode count around that.

The new approach is certainly interesting and was likely possible because of Netflix’ freedom from airing schedules. It should also save the show from any unnecessary filler. As for the final episode amount, this decision could go one way or the other; we could end up with a few more or a few less depending on how things pan out. That said, even if the season works out shorter than we might like, at least we can be sure that the final result will now be of the highest possible quality.
