Hello Kitty 40th Anniversary Celebration

gfd Who would think this iconic little kitty is 40 years old? Also for the fact that I only found out recently she is actually a little girl who dresses as a cat (who knew!). Hello Kitty wandered onto the scene in 1974 and has had the world wrapped up in her little red bow ever since becoming one the best known pop icon animated figures in history next to Betty Boop. To help celebrate Hello Kitty’s 40th anniversary VIZ Media have released “HELLO KITTY, HELLO 40” – a hardcover full colour anthology which features a fantastic line up of Hello Kitty fans paying tribute and what they love about the pop icon through stories and art. Contributors will include Award winning Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani creators of Tiny Titans, Uglydoll co-creator David Horvath, Brian Smith, co-creator of the New York Times series Stuff of Legend and Gene Luen Yang author of American Born Chinese and Boxers and Saints. The 40th Anniversary Tribute is available now (€23.74).

The very first Hello Kitty convention will be taking place at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA – Museum of Contemporary Art in the Little Tokyo District of Downtown LA on October 30th – November 2nd. VIZ Media will be present at their Perfect Square booth with a convention exclusive edition of HELLO KITTY, HELLO 40 while also having a variety of other HELLO KITTY graphic novel titles.
“Hello Kitty has inspired and influenced artists the world over, and we’ve invited some of them to pay tribute and share their Hello Kitty memories,” says Traci Todd, Perfect Square’s Senior Editor. “This anthology of wordless comics is truly for Hello Kitty fans of all ages. You’ll recognize many of the artists from our main Hello Kitty series, and others from the worlds of comics, pop culture and children’s literature. It’s our small gift to Hello Kitty for 40 years of big smiles!”
